A post from Guest Blogger Joyce Clemmons, who knows that heaven comes to earth for some inner-city kids when they get away to camp!
FIRST ANNUAL EVENING FOR ALKULANA RIVER ROAD CHURCH BAPTIST, OCTOBER 6, 2012
“The evening is a fund-raising event to benefit Camp Alkulana, the year-round ministry of the Richmond Baptist Association with a targeted summer camp ministry to at-risk children. The camp has been in continuous operation since it began in 1915.” (From program)
Nearly one hundred members from RBA churches around Richmond gathered at River Road Church, Baptist on Saturday evening. They enjoyed partaking of delicious passed hors d’oeuvres. Guests raced back and forth, participating in the silent auction with everything from handmade quilts to a vacation in the mountains of Virginia. A delicious dinner was prepared by Brenda Nunnally of New Bridge Church, owner of “Freshly Yours by Brenda.” Musical entertainment was provided by Jerry Jones.
Following dinner, four camp staff members gave testimonies about what Alkulana had meant to them over the years.
Funds raised from the meal and the silent auction totals $6,000 and is still growing. Sixteen First Baptist Church members attended and some assisted with the meal service. I believe many of us there that evening felt the kingdom of heaven come to Richmond in our hearts. We envisioned how beneficial that $6,000 would be to make scholarships available for children in the Richmond area to attend Camp Alkulana next summer. We each wished we could have made more purchases in the silent auction so additional camp dreams could come true.
It was a marvelous evening and I am already talking with Mike Robinson about the Second Annual Evening for Alkulana. Hopefully, we can expand our dreams about Alkulana as we endeavor to bring the Kingdom of Heaven to Richmond, Virginia, in the coming year. We need 200 people at the next dinner and we need to raise $12,000!
Praise God from whom all blessings flow …
