KOH2RVA: Day 259

FBC members Tom and Nancy Chewning are bringing the Kingdom of Heaven to Richmond, Virginia, through their love for sports, their love for kids, their love for Christ and a place called U-Turn that brings all three together. This may be the perfect story for Trinity Sunday! Thanks, Tom and Nancy, for all the ways you bring heaven to earth, and thanks David Powers for producing this video.

  1. U-Turn is a great place for all children and teenagers. I have a granddaugher who plays volleyball and has well benefitted from her experiences there. Thank you to Tom and Nancy for what you do.

  2. Back in the 1990s, one Wednesday evening my wife, daughter and I were at First Baptist for the Wednesday evening activities. My wife was helping with our daughter’s childrens’ mission friends class. There weren’t any activities I felt like participating in so I was just sitting there, reading the newspaper in a waiting area off the children’s area. Some other members were sitting there waiting on their children and families too. Some of the guys sitting there were active as coaches in church league basketball and softball. I suddenly became aware of their conversation when one of them said, “Some parents complain to me that I won’t let their children on our team but I can’t. They really are not talented and that might cause us to lose and affect my win-loss record.” Some of the other guys agreed. I sat there, praying that God would help me overcome my deep desire to “launch into them with a major rant”. Apparently God helped me so, Instead of griping to them, I wrote letters to the then Pastor and Deacons, “ranting to them” about how this was “church league sports” and people SHOULD be able to participate. I don’t know how well my “rant” was taken because nobody responded, however, some time later, I noticed that First Baptist did start to participate in a league which encouraged participation by anyone interested and did so from a ministry point of view. I was glad of that, no matter whose idea it was, and am glad that the Chewnings are helping bring the Kingdom of Heaven to Richmond through U-Turn Sports. May God bless them!
